Industriel, it should be mentioned, is a restaurant that can leave a certain kind of person sputtering with rage. It is decorated in a kind of Depression chic, for one thing. Walls are paneled with old wooden soda crates. Banquettes are upholstered in a gold vinyl you may have never seen outside cocktail lounges attached to ancient Midwestern bowling alleys. And the not-unplentiful homeless people on the street outside are confronted with the enormous blowups of Dorothea Lange’s photographs of starving Depression-era migrant workers that flank the doors. A rusty block and tackle hangs near the hostess station, and the main dining room is dominated by an arrangement of glowing, bear-shaped honey containers, many dozens of them, dangling over a rusted old bathtub. Victorian age steam energy meets kick-ass martial arts in a wacky, hyper, head-on collision, Tai Chi 0, an exuberant attempt to weld steampunk to kungfu in a big-budget Chinese actioner. Successful? I got a nice comment the other day about my Time Quake trilogy saying that more people should read this English “steampunk” series. I keep seeing this term which (I think?) originated in the US.  Does this tag have something to do with a modern bit of machinery (in my case an anti-gravity machine) within a historical narrative – or what?  What exactly is “steampunk”? It’s a Sunday morning and I’m sitting across from my husband, staring at a piece of crispy golden fried chicken sandwiched between two waffles on his plate.  We’re at the new SteamPunk Coffee Bar Kitchen in Valley Village, and there’s something about his heart-clogging breakfast served with a healthy side of kale that just seems right for brunch.
