A Beach Book for Winter: Making Waves
Almost every book friend I know has their pet genres. For me, it’s paranormal romance, young adult, steampunk and a select few sweeping historicals. I buy most of my books based on Twitter recommendations, but I can tell from jacket copy whether or not I’ll finish the book. And yet, every now and then, a book completely surprises me. “Making Waves” by Tawna Fenske is a light-hearted contemporary romance sunny enough to make you forget how cold and wet it’s gotten all of a sudden. And it’s not a book I would normally pick up–not a single vampire, fairy, clockwork monkey, snarky teenager, or kilt-clad highlander to be seen. And yet I adored it, mostly … Read entire article »

Rebel Ink Press is Proud to Announce the Release of The Pollinators by Winfield H. Strock III
PRLog (Press Release) – Dec 31, 2011 – Author Winfred H. Strock III is a Cold War submariner and history buff and his creative imagination has always kept him entertained beneath the waves. With his naval career behind him and the uncertainty of civilian life ahead he began his first novel. Undeterred by a brain tumor and driven more fervently after successful surgery, Winfield hopes to light the same imaginative spark in others as the authors of his inspirations did for him. ‘Adventures’, a steampunk novel, his first with Rebel Ink Press, chronicled the hidden history of a voyage to distant worlds and alien cultures. The Pollinators tackles the exploration of the stars – but at what cost to a planet? The Pollinators, his second book with Rebel Ink Press, will be … Read entire article »

How I became a J-pop fangirl
Every form of geeky fandom can be a slippery slope of obsession. The franchises and worldly outlooks that inspire devotion by so many are riddled with gently linked, coincidentally tangential fandoms. As a fan, it’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole and wind up with a brand new passion. For example, a Doctor Who fan may suddenly be drawn to Steampunk. A board game fan may be drawn helplessly into the mystique of Cthulhu. And a fan of anime may one day experience a great surge of joy while dancing around the house, listening to The Pillows. This is how it happens – how you become a J-pop fangirl. My transformation from a typical anime fan to a J-pop fangirl came in several phases. I started watching anime seriously when I was … Read entire article »

Steampunk style takes hold in western Pa.
You seldom see so many corsets and top hats in a bar. Ah, but a recent Thursday was no typical night at Lava Lounge on Pittsburgh’s South Side; it was the monthly gathering of the Steel City Steam Society, a group that has embraced steampunk culture. They didn’t party like it was 1899, they just dressed that way, sporting clothes reminiscent of Victorian-era England, or the Wild West. Women in floor-length silk dresses mingled with men in brass goggles, aviator glasses and other accoutrements of the late 19th century, befitting the style of steampunk, which began as a sci-fi literary genre before transforming to a fashion trend and pastime. “I always liked that aesthetic, of corsets and Victorian things,” said Hopewell Township resident Alexa Black, founder of the Steel City Steam Society. Somebody saw … Read entire article »
