Costumes, Christmas, Mystery, and History

advertisement It’s funny how much the Victorian era continues to dominate our modern Christmases. Oh sure, we have the silver, contemporary stemware, and the neon, LED lights. But we also put out the Currier  Ives tins and sing about dashing through snow via horse-drawn sleigh. And do women, on occasion, break out the faux fur hand muffs? They do, even today. So when the opportunity comes along to truly celebrate the Yuletide in a Victorian manner, even the most tomorrow-forward person is … Read entire article »

DaVinci is the Tegra 3 steampunk-Doom that one guy has been waiting for

DaVinci is the Tegra 3 steampunk-Doom that one guy has been waiting for Worth Reading? We kid, we kid. DaVinci THD gets points for originality, at least – the Tegra 3-enabled first person shooter takes place in the Renaissance era. And since guns were just a little more than small cannons back then, it takes a few liberties when it comes to weapons, not to mention environments and costumes. You can see for yourself in new screenshots that have made it to Nvidia’s Tegra Zone. Previously known as Project Renaissance, the arena-based multiplayer shooter will be released early next year. The visuals are definitely the star of the show here: while they’re not quite as impressive as some of the new Tegra-enabled games we’ve seen lately, the bright, unique visual style makes Da … Read entire article »

Olivier’s Twist

Portrait: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com; Runway, from left: Don Ashby (4); Theory (2)Man of the hour Olivier Theyskens (center) has shifted from hyper-romantic clothes to modern sportswear. Since Olivier Theyskens exudes an edgy romanticism with his poetic long hair, he has always seemed like a Belgian goth. At the end of the last century, when he was a 21-year-old prodigy, he made clothes with a hint of darkness and dressed Madonna in a long frock coat for the 1998 Academy Awards. Now, at age 34, he is making cool clothes for his own generation, creating a 21st-century version of American sportswear as designer for his own Theyskens’ Theory label and for the giant Theory company, which is under the umbrella of the Japan-based Fast Retailing group. Most of the years between were dedicated to luxury … Read entire article »
