Satisfy your inner steampunk with the Big Daddy Nerf gun

Secretly want to play with Nerf guns again, but afraid neon orange and yellow just won’t your grown-up persona? Then Etsy model maker Neil Taylor has the toy for you. This BioShock-inspired steampunktastic creation is dubbed the Big Daddy. It started out as a standard Nerf N-Strike Barricade. Taylor used his masterful craftsmanship to add on planks of wood cut from a chair that he says was “at least” 75-years-old. The metal straps are made from hand-cut aluminum that’s been riveted into the wood. On top, Taylor has added a 3x-zoom scope that actually works. And, of course, the heavily modified toy still has all its Nerf shooting functionality, with an access panel on the top to unstick jammed darts. Unfortunately, Taylor already sold the Big Daddy to some lucky Etsy buyer for … Read entire article »

Day Two at Paris Fashion Week — Funky Fur to Granny Gold, and Too Much Skinniness

A day in fashion week feels like a month of normal time. And day two of Paris Fashion Week was an explosion of colours, sounds and experiences. Today saw Barbara Bui, Carven, Nina Ricci and Pierre Balmain amongst others. Some old some new. Nothing borrowed and not much blue. Nina Ricci graced us with floaty dresses and Victoriana. Barbara Bui turned fur funky. There were two particular designers — at Carven and Balmain young and upcoming and wanted to make their mark. Carven was at the classic Jeu de Paume building near the Tuileries yet there was nothing traditional about the show. We sat in middle of catwalk on blocks and the runway was around us — no random beehive blocked the view. Yellows with pinks and rainbow dresses made girls … Read entire article »

Steampunk Film Festival

It’s difficult to free your mind from the unconscious mental trappings of social norms. We grow up learning what is right and wrong, normal and then weird then spend our entire lives trying to toe the line between originality and insanity. Doing this, we can miss some of the most enjoyable concepts or creations of art simply because they’re too “out there.” Steampunk is one of those gems that might be overlooked in favor of more traditional interpretations of film, visual and musical artistry. Essentially, it’s a genre of fantasy, speculative fiction, science fiction, and alternate history involving a setting in which steam power (hence the “steam” part of Steampunk) is used alongside scientific fiction or fantasy elements. It works along the lines of creating a scene that the persons of … Read entire article »

Winter’s Over (Lets Have An Adventure)

WINTER WRAP UP STEAMPUNK! This was finished a lot quicker than I thought…partly because I have nothing to do except study until Saturday…=P So, I went in a slightly different direction for this one. I decided to create a number of different emotions and feelings in a short space of time, rather than giving it a factory based sound throughout. Of course, the Steampunk feel is still very apparent, but this sounds a bit more like the helter-skelter style of an opening to an anime. Y’know, everyone doing fancy flips about the opening credits and super long and quick panning with the camera…=PAnyway, as the name suggests, it’s more “ADVENTURE” Steampunk, rather than “WORK” Steampunk! Pictures are:1) Dunno, it’s on Ponibooru though!2) Muffinsforever! http://muffinsforever.deviantart.com/art/Wrap-Up-that-Winter-2543381653) As the picture suggests, by GigaToast (or BlockEraser) http://blockeraser.deviantart.com/art/Steed-Punk-2548813454) … Read entire article »
