Sienna Miller And Poppy Delevingne Work Victoriana Lace
Sienna Miller and Poppy Delevingne work matching high-neck lace at the Ralph Lauren Wimbledon party. We love the Victorian styling, and how the girls have both worked the pretty white lace with black to toughen it up. For Poppy it’s black leather leggings (not an item seen in the Victorian ages!), while Sienna teams her Ralph Lauren dress with black ankle boots. White for Wimbledon, well it’d be rude not to! Derby Day, By DJ Taylor
DJ Taylor is an aficionado of Victoriana – his 2006 novel Kept was a mystery steeped in that era’s murky gloom, and he has written an acclaimed biography on Thackeray, whose life was as dramatic as any novel by him or Dickens. In Derby Day, Taylor returns to Victorian intrigue and an England peopled by bounders, dandies, gentlemen and their ostensibly respectable ladyfolk, and the underworld of poverty that growls beneath this pristine surface. The story is about a number of characters whose fates ride on the Derby at Epsom. A scheming charmer named Happerton woos Rebecca (cold and sharp in nature, in reference to Vanity Fair’s manipulative Becky Sharp), the daughter of an elderly lawyer. Happerton has various means of coercing his targets into becoming indebted to him, and in this … Read entire article »

OUT NOW IN PAPERBACK
By Hephzibah Anderson Last updated at 6:58 PM on 30th June 2011 THE OPPOSITE OF FALLING BY JENNIE ROONEY (Vintage £7.99) This brisk yet tender-hearted novel is many things. It’s a voyage of self-discovery featuring two heroines you’ll immediately root for; a study of the earliest stirrings of feminism; and, yes, a charmingly unsentimental love story. But it also manages to evoke the thrill of early travel, when flight was still a dream and every journey an adventure. It opens in 1862, when Ursula Bridgewater decides to take a trip from her native Liverpool to Wales with the Thomas Cook company. She’s always chalked her restlessness up to the fact that at 25 she remains unwed, having been unceremoniously jilted by her fiancé, but the Thomas Cook tour sets her wondering – and wandering. … Read entire article »

Book Review: Carnal Machines: Steampunk Erotica Edited by D. L. King
I had no idea what to expect when I picked up Carnal Machines. I confess that before reading the foreword, I wasn’t 100% sure what steampunk was – though it turned out that I was pretty much right in my thinking. And for those of you that don’t know, in brief the genre is stories based in the Victorian era with an emphasis on inventions and machinery, i.e. steam-powered. Now that’s cleared up, on to the review… When I started reading Carnal Machines I quickly realised that the title was very literal. I knew that the machinery would be involved, obviously, but I wasn’t expecting, well, sex machines. There are naughty gadgets left, right and centre in this book – it’s a Victorian version of a sex toy shop! The book really captures … Read entire article »

Steampunk, pirate fest hosts wedding
Advertisement Kenton Schwenke first proposed to his wife via text message. So it was not surprising that there was nothing traditional about their wedding, a steampunk affair held last night at the Central Missouri Pirate Festival. The bride wore a white dress with a red corset and had a sword on her hip. The groom, dressed in black with a sword and additional accessories, had a plastic blaster. “Tonight’s wedding is official,” said bride Tori Anne Buckley, 18, before she became Mrs. Schwenke. “The October wedding is our big wedding. It’s for the family. But we wanted to show off a steampunk wedding.” Steampunk incorporates science fiction or fantasy into Victorian-era and Industrial Revolution-era fashion and music. Yesterday was the steampunk portion of the festival, which will resume today at 10 … Read entire article »

Steampunk Harley Quinn, goth pirate, and Final Fantasy Fallout: How Sega thought of westernising Bayonetta
How do you like your gun-swinging, high-kicking witch protagonists to look? Happy with a figure-hugging catsuit made of hair that drops off a second’s notice? Or would you prefer a big set of sci-fi boots and a long coat? Or maybe something more akin to a Steampunk Harley Quinn would be more to your tastes? Just revealed via the concept artist’s blog, it turns out that Sega considered giving Bayonetta a complete character make-over back in 2008, a year or so before the game’s release. The intention? Make her more western-friendly. There are six versions below, and barring glasses they’re all a far cry from the leggy latex look she ended up with. Are they any good? Were they even necessary? Have a look and let me know what you think. Cheers, OXM! June 29, 2011 Article source: … Read entire article »

Help Captain Andy complete his rad steampunk pirate ship car
Attention steampunk pirates! The C.S. Tere (needs a more steampunk-ish name) needs your help to complete it. The big draw-in for this hand-built steel and wood pirate ship car? That 10-foot diameter hub-less front wheel. As of now, the Captain Andy’s C.S. Tere is nearly done. It just needs a new engine, hydraulics, steel, fuel transportation costs and some awesome fire poofers and then it’ll be complete for its maiden voyage, er, drive. So far (as of this writing), Andy’s Kickstarter project has $2,000 of its $6,000 goal and needs a few more donations. If you’re feeling generous today, help the guy out with a donation and you could get freebies like patches, magnets, tripods, t-shirts, or a 3D calendar that will show the the process for the C.S. Tere’s construction. You can … Read entire article »
