Letting your imagination soar

The term “steampunk” was coined in the 1980s to describe science fiction and fantasy novels heavily influenced by the fiction of Jules Verne and the age of steam power. Today steampunk is a sprawling subculture with its own movies, music, fashions, and retro-futuristic creations like “The Eye-Pod Victrola.’’ The perfect place for interested parties to begin their explorations is “The Steampunk Bible: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Imaginary Airships, Corsets and Goggles, Mad Scientists, and Strange Literature’’ (Abrams) by Jeff VanderMeer with S.J. Chambers. It’s like stepping inside a time machine with delightfully scrambled circuitry. A Steampunk journey in San Diego

San Diego already has Comic-Con, one of the largest comic book and pop culture conventions in the world. But recently, the city’s also been attracting some of Comic-Con’s not-so-Hollywood subcultures. In March, Anime Conji brought together fans of Japanese comics from all over the state. And this weekend, San Diego hosted Gaslight Gathering, Southern California’s first-ever Steampunk convention. For the uninitiated, Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction. It blends the Victorian era with the future and explores imagined technologies, such as weapons powered by steam and computers that run on clock gears. It’s also very much about elaborate costumes that range from corsets and skirts to futuristic cowboys. Happening Sunday Gaslight Gathering: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Steampunk convention concludes with an ice cream social and fashion show. Town Country … Read entire article »

Rare items a target in Nedlands heist

Nedlands couple Skot McDonald and Tara Surry are furious at thieves who stole several treasured collector’s pieces from their home in February. Mr McDonald is an avid follower of steampunk, a cultural movement that fuses science fiction with 19th century Victorian fashion, and was devastated to find a pair of brass goggles and motif wrist bracers, bought on a recent trip to London, were among the valuables taken. “I had brought them back a week before,” he said. “I had them displayed on the mantelpiece so they must have seen them and thought ‘Oh, they’re shiny’.” He said most of the stolen pieces were one-offs and had been either brought from overseas or the Eastern States or handmade at Perth art space the Artifactory, where steampunk enthusiasts frequently gathered. Among the missing items are a … Read entire article »

'Amazing' Comicpalooza 2011 a Hit with Fans

Some 10,000 people decided to spend a big part of their Memorial Day weekend at Comicpalooza, a relatively new fantasy, sci-fi, and comic book convention in Houston that has quickly become the biggest and hottest event of its kind in Texas. The fourth-annual event was held May 27-29 at the George R. Brown Convention Center and was attended by many people from the San Antonio area, who made the relatively short road trip down IH 10 to the Lone Star State’s biggest city. “It’s really been amazing,” said John Simons, the “guilty party,” as he puts it, behind the organization of Comicpalooza. “We’ve had a lot of great events, a lot of them you don’t see at other cons. Edward James Olmos, for example, playing laser tag against some storm troopers.” … Read entire article »

EYE ON ART: Street Art, Steampunk Intertwine At Vintage Collective

What do Street Art and Steampunk have in common?     For that matter, what exactly is Steampunk?     To answer the first question, it would seem that on the surface neither has anything to do with the other.     However, upon closer inspection — courtesy of a new exhibit — the relationship between both forms of art is quite similar, providing an answer to the second question.     Currently on view through June 10 at The Vintage Collective, “Street Art Steampunk Art Show” features the works of Pete Ramirez and 5AM, the young, savvy and industrious Street artist whose moniker, “Who’s 5AM?” has been inundating most of Southern California.      “The way we find and use objects is how we’re alike,” said 5AM during our interview when describing the similarities between each art form. “We both just go for it; we just … Read entire article »
